Fab Flash: Gwyneth Fur Ad Angers PETA

The first time I saw this Tod's ad starring Gwyneth Paltrow in a glossy I was surprised to say the least. The close friend of Stella McCartney and wife of vegetarian Chris Martin seems like a surprising choice for a company that uses not just fur but also ostrich and snakeskin in its products. Tod's describes itself as "refined, understated luxury, impeccable taste and enviable quality." The use of fur on the catwalk was definitely up this season, particularly in Paris where the likes of Jean Paul Gaultier created fur clad collections. Indeed The British Fur Trade Association have commented stating there is a rising global demand for the animal fabric.

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) are not impressed. They told The Daily Telegraph,

"We've written to her many times, and sent her videos showing how animals suffer for fur, but have never received a response. Apparently her beauty really is only skin deep. Gwyneth Paltrow won't be the apple of her daughter's eye if she continues to flaunt fur. It's a terrible example to set for a young child."

Gwyneth made the ads, which were shot by Mario Testino, back in May as she took over from Sienna Miller as the face of Tod's. Some have commented that Gwyneth may have jeopardised her friendship with McCartney who just last week faced problems with Hockley.

Do you think that Gwyneth's appearance in the ad campaign makes her a hypocrite? Or do you think it's perfectly acceptable for her to be the face of Tod's?

I always thought Gwyneth was a veggie or vegan too. Even if she isn't she's big on healthy, ethical and eco living so it does seem a little hypocritical.

I'm a vegetarian, but sometimes PETA overreacts. It's not like she's wearing it in public, it's a job!

PETA are well harsh and slightly out of order, you can't say someone's a bad mother because she wears fur.. no wonder Gwyneth doesn't reply to them.. idiots... We all have different views on fur and I'm sure Stella was well aware that her friend doesn't have the same feeling's about it than she does.. As does her other friend Kate Moss! I don't think they'll lose their friendship over it...

Besides she can't be a hypocrite when she's always said that she likes the luxury of fur..

Oh ok, I didn't actually read the post. Embarassed I'm a veggie, I'm am so against PETA (that's a whole other looong story though), and I completely disagree with what they say. But I was sure she is/was a Vegan, if so she's changed her beliefs extremely quickly.

If animal husbandry were to cease, what vested interest would anyone have in the existence of chickens, pigs, ostriches, cows and other animals? I believe in ethical treatment of humans and animals, but anything you wear, buy, or eat is NOT without its own footprint or set of problems.

Peta needs to grow up. I am so sick of seeing blind acceptance of PETA and its gestapo tactics.

Whether or not you like PETA (and I'm not a fan) the truth is that over 40 million animals are killed every year for their fur. Countries like China have NO regulations for this whatsoever and often practice skinning animals alive believing it makes for shinier pelts. If Gwyneth or anyone else actually witnessed the conditions the majority of these animals live AND die in - they would not find fur a "luxury" at all. The biggest problem is that there is such a DISCONNECT between most people's clothing (and food) that they don't really stop to think about how it got from A to B to on their backs.

Please consider the life of another living creature before making off handed comments, and certainly before taking any action...like with your almighty dollar. Thank you!

PETA has becoming more and more annoying. Like they don't kill animals that they rescued... She doesn't own the fur, jezz!

PETA over reacts. What gives them the right to criticize how she raises her kids through wearing a coat for wear for the job? Any smart person knows to separate their work life from their personal life.

I have a problem with her saying she's anti-fur, then saying that an assistant snuck up behind her and threw the fur on her. For Christ's sake, at least take responsibility for yourself! Plus, she was wearing fur-lined boots - I doubt the assistant snuck those on her...

I agree that she's a hypocrite - if she is anti-fur, she should not be wearing it ever.
as for the whole "it's a job" argument, normally I would agree with you, but she has a high enough status and demand that she could easily refuse to do something that she doesn't believe in. for instance, if an up-and-coming actor is asked to do a nude scene, it's harder for them to say no because that could be their only chance/"big break" (not that I think they should). but when someone like Sarah Jessica Parker, who already is a household name, can refuse to do nudity, which I know she does, because she can get other work. you see what I mean?
I'm not anti-fur, but I do respect anyone who is. however, I am extremely anti-abortion, and what I can't stand about many animal rights activists (especially PETA) is that they are completely pro- killing your own baby, but they attack (often physically) anyone who is in any way involved with something that doesn't respect animals' rights. call me crazy, but I believe people have more value than animals. and I agree that it is not their right and so innapropriate for anyone to say Gwyneth is a bad mom (even if she is)..
