English Eccentric: Dunhill Launch New Scent

Dunhill is arguably one of the most well respected and traditional British labels. Devised in 1893, it began as a motor accessory brand to appeal to the quintessential British gentleman. Before long Dunhill became known for selling all sorts of paraphenalia such as fishing rods, pipes, sporting equipment, stationary and classic motoring gloves.

This Sunday (23rd November) Dunhill is unveiling it's latest project. It's an unashamedly masculine scent which will be exclusive to Harrods, before rolling out nationwide in February 2009. Following in the footsteps of the brand's first fragrance, which was launched in 1934, Dunhill Black (£42 100 ml) aims to appeal to the iconic English gentleman. Will Andrews, Fragrance Scientist on the Dunhill Fragrance Creation Team explains, “We wanted to create something with surprising masculinity. To combine an edgy green note with a sensual base.”

Product Review: Sisley Gentle Eye and Lip Makeup Remover

Now the jury's out about whether most of you prefer to use a separate eye makeup remover or not. I always used to remove my makeup with a creamy cleanser, regardless of whether I was wearing just a touch of mascara or going for full-on smoky eyes. Recently though, I've been noticing that the older I get and more time I spend in front of a computer, the more sensitive my eyes are. When they used to be just fine with a quick swipe of pretty much anything, now unless I use a specific eye makeup remover I end up looking like I've just been crying.

Well at least I have one thing in common with Uma Thurman. Like the long-limbed actress I share a love of skincare brand Ren and am a true devotee of their shower creams and body lotions in particular. As a complete body lotion addict anyway, it's no surprise then that I'm head-over-heels about Ren's Damask Rose Body Cream, (£24.50).

This a truly luxurious body lotion. It's ultra thick and absorbs easily leaving your skin glowing and soft. The thick yet not cloggy consistency makes for a nourishing effect that's not at all sticky or greasy. Essential fatty acids from rose hip seed oil and jojoba oil work to boost the skin's lipid content, restore moisture levels and increase the skin's ability to retain moisture. Expect petal-soft skin with a healthy glow.

The uplifting fragrance of damask rose petals is better than eating chocolate if you want to feel completely indulged and pampered. Rose is known to balance the emotions and create feelings of wellbeing, whilst ramnose sugar, which is also on the list of ingredients, stimulates beta endrophin release. No wonder I feel so happy after using this cream, it's like true love in a bottle!

This season oversize bows have replaced floral blooms as the hair acccessory of choice for the cool set. As Christmas is fast approaching, I hope you've all been checking out mine and Fab UK's 2008 Holiday Gift Guides. Jean Paul Gaultier's Latest Muse

"Ma dame is not a lady, she is my muse. She amuses me." So says Jean Paul Gaultier of his latest perfume. This bold yet feminine fragrance plays on Gaultier's signature style of highlighting traditionally feminine and masculine attributes and making them into almost a parody of themselves. Ma Dame (£26 for 30ml) aims to be a modern fragrance, but as with all Gaultier's creations it has a definite sense of La Belle Epoque.

The perfume is based on a mischievous and humourous character with model of the moment Agyness Deyn as the face of the scent. The juice itself is sparkling and young, with zesty orange top notes. There are also hints of grenadine and rose, plus base notes of cedar and musk.

“Ma Dame’s signature is short and sharp, like the stroke of a marker on a blank page. There is a great deal of strength and a great deal of softness in this fragrance. Selfridges Launch Men's Only Grooming Salon

It appears that any stigma regarding men using beauty products has completely disappeared in these post-metrosexual times. After the manscara craze this summer and the recent news that men are as botox-obsessed as women, it's no surprise that this winter British men are in for a beauty treat, all of their own. Selfridges launches Gentlemen's Tonic today; a men only salon with a focus on spa-style treatments and grooming.

In a bid to tap into the £700 million male grooming market, Gentlemen’s Tonic is situated in the vibrant London store. Credit Crunch Beauty at The Body Shop

Product Review: Butter London HRH Nail Polish

Butter London is one of those beauty brands that is fast becoming cult property. Although the company is actually based in Seattle, it offers a thoroughly British experience with quirky names such as Old Blighty and Chimney Sweep. Their creative director, Nonie Creme has worked on numerous A-list nails, including Kate Moss, as well as creating looks on campaigns for Vogue, H&M, and Jimmy Choo. This is one nail polish brand with serious fashion credentials.

I'm also pleased to note that it's not all about image. Butter London has a strong commitment to making non-toxic polishes. All of the polishes are free of the "big three" — toluene, DBP, and formaldehyde. It's a relief to know you needn't worry about toxicity in the quest to be beautiful.

In terms of colours, these are bang on-trend. After checking out my girl Bella US's favourite shades, I found it very hard to choose between Butter London's gothic glam black, patriotically called Union Jack Black and the royal looking HRH. Sarah Jessica Parker Has a Moment With New Fragrances

Sarah Jessica Parker is launching another collection of perfumes. Following in the footsteps of Coty Prestige counterpart — Gwen Stefani, who launched the five-fragrance Harajuku Lovers lineup in September — Sarah Jessica will be creating a bevy of scents. The Lovely Collection line will comprise of three scents — Dawn, Endless and Twilight.

“The concept of moments lent itself to multiple fragrances,”Sarah Jessica told WWD. “This was meant to be a personal collection of fragrances, I wanted to offer a little glimpse into my world, something that was genuine and relatable — very specific moments, treasures of time.”

The actress first moved into the perfume business in September 2005 with Lovely, her first scent. Since then, her fragrance collection has expanded to include Covet Sarah Jessica Parker and Covet Bloom. Each of the new scents features a different colour combination with floral abstract designs along the back of the bottle.

Pond's a Winner For Credit Crunch Beauty

Sometimes it seems the oldies really are the best. Classic skincare brand Pond's is one of the few labels that is actually benefiting from the credit crunch. While people stop stocking up on fashion and expensive hair accessories, the beauty industry is still saying it hasn't felt the pinch yet.

Economists have dubbed this phenomena the Lipstick Effect. Generally in a time of recession people reach for small comforts such as a nice lipstick instead of a Chanel bag. Wearing metallic nail varnish or working a new makeup trend is a quick and relatively cheap way of updating your style this season.

However, it still makes sense to try and reign in your beauty spending if you can, although I know it isn't always easy. Looking for bargain products or those that do the job of expensive creams, while costing a fraction of the price is the name of the game this autumn. A recent survey carried out by Pond's shows that 85% of women across the UK are spending under £20 a month on their skincare regime.

Shiseido to Launch New Makeup Line

Cult Japanese skincare brand Shiseido has its sites set high as it aims to become a global beauty player with a new makeup line, early next year. The range is being developed with New York-based makeup artist Dick Paige and will be called, simply, Shiseido. Starting with a selection of moisturising lipsticks and lip pencils, the line will debut in Japan and the US in January 2009 before being rolled out worldwide in the first half of next year.

General manager of Shiseido’s international marketing department, Hiroshi Maruyama, told WWD that the company plans to move on to eye shadow and foundation in time for autumn/winter 2009. All of the new Shiseido makeup products will be packaged in red boxes bearing Shiseido’s signature floral logo. Maruyama added “Of course for makeup, color itself is the more important factor… so that’s why we’re collaborating with Dick." The brand is also working with Australian model Christina Carey, who will star in the line’s advertising and promotional materials.

Versace Create Ultimate Luxury Fragrance

The glittering temple to consumerism that is the newly opened Westfield shopping centre is all my West London-based friends are talking about. Personally I'm not really a mall girl myself, but I was excited to learn that Westfield is planning to play host to an innovative beauty bar. In the run up to Christmas, which crazily enough has already started on planet beauty, I'm being practically bombarded with information about all the new perfume releases. Personally I'm not really interested in celebrity endorsements when it comes to scent. Instead I'm looking for an distinctive smell that has lasting power, plus a bottle that will look beautiful on my dressing table.

Cue Michael Kors Very Pretty (£40), which is available from 1st November. The packaging has a winer wonderland feel with a modern silver and glass bottle that looks unusual thanks to those snowball-esque sparkling crystals. The box is sleek and silver too, and while some cosmetics companies go way over the top with their Christmas-themed approach, this is a restrained and sophisticated offering.

The juice itself has a young, fresh appeal. They've taken the original Michael Kors fragrance and given it a makeover with a mixture of zesty citrus notes and white florals to keep it feminine. The inclusion of coconut in the ingredients is an unusual, and somewhat brave choice, but it's pretty subtle so there's none of that holiday suncream whiff that I was dreading. The creamy, musky tones are nicely balanced out by orange flower making this an appealing fragrance for someone in their twenties or thirties.

As I've mentioned before, I try to get a variety of people with different skin types to test the products to be reviewed here, so that it's not just about what works for me and my skin. The task of trialling the anti-aging treatments usually falls to my mother, who happily is a self-confessed guinea pig for new skin treats!

One of Cosmopolitan's Sexiest Men Brad Pitt is showing he's not just a pretty face. The actor is following in the footsteps of wife Angelina Jolie and using his fame for a good cause. Brad is working with Kiehl's to raise money for eco initiatives. Back in the summer my girl BellaSugar US told you about Brad and Kiehl's new deal and now the good work continues as their Aloe Vera Liquid Cleanser hits counters in the UK.

100% of the proceeds from the cleanser go to JPF Eco Systems. This charity, which is co-owned by Brad Pitt and Kiehl's, seeks to support global environmental initiatives such as the building of environmentally sustainable housing for victims of Hurricane Katrina. I know it's only October, but already all the big beauty brands are starting to introduce their Christmas gift packages in stores across the country. Paul & Joe's indulgent sets are available in two fragrances. Green Floral comes in a pink box and is a fresh and fruity perfume. Balenciaga to Launch Perfume

As the news hit last week that Gareth Pugh was launching a fragrance, this week another designer perfume collaboration comes to light. It's now been officially announced that after a long break from the beauty world, Balenciaga will move back into fragrances. They have signed an exclusive deal with Coty Prestige to launch a new luxury line of scents worldwide.

The partnership will renew Balenciaga's image as a serious luxury fragrance contender and will be in keeping with their fragrance heritage. This began in 1946 with the launch of their iconic scent, 'Le Dix'. Coty Prestige, who also distribute fragrances from fashion brands like Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and Chloe amongst others, have announced that the first Balenciaga fragrance is likely to launch in Spring 2010.

"Fragrance is something that was absolutely missing in the Balenciaga universe," CEO of Balenciaga Isabelle Guichot told WWD, "We want to extend the Balenciaga brand to a broader audience."

With everyone from the A-list to the rock star clique desperate to wear Nicolas Ghesquiere's stunning designs for Balenciaga, I'm intrigued to find out what the fragrances will be like. I wonder how all that pretty, sci-fi glitz in the Spring/Summer collection will translate into smell? Watch this space.

Givenchy Remixes Beauty With Art

We all know that looking beautiful is something of an art form, but now Givenchy are celebrating the very special relationship between beauty and art to coincide with their new mascara. The revolutionary Phenomen'Eyes, (£17.50), with its ground-breaking spherical brush has certainly caught our attention. What is less well known is that Parfums Givenchy has commissioned British artist Ian Wright to create a work of art using approximately 5,000 of the Phenomen'Eyes brushes.

The result is 5045 Lashes, a work that symbolises the remixing of a fashion-inspired beauty collection with art. 5045 Lashes will be displayed for one night only at the Christopher Henry Gallery in New York and will appear throughout New York City in pop-up galleries this autumn. Tonight and tomorrow it will be at Sephora Soho, and 17th and 18th October will be Sephora Union Square.

Gareth Pugh to Launch Fragrance

Young British designer Gareth Pugh recently took his collection to Paris Fashion Week but it seems he now wants to add more to his CV by launching a fragrance. Along with the equally controversial designer Jeremy Scott and London based duo Preen the designers are turning their noses to creating a perfume as part of the Six Scents Fragrance Initiative.

The initiative raises funds for the Designers Against AIDS International AIDS Awareness Education Center in Antwerp, Belgium. Only two thousand of each unisex fragrance will be created and available by the end of the year from stores such as Colette in Paris and Seven in New York.

Pugh named his fragrance 'Diagonal' (supposed to represent the ambiguous slant of the fragrance which has dark masculine tones and feminine elements) whilst Scott titled his 'Sex'.

These handy little tubs are ideal for stashing in your draw at work for when you want a quick touch-up and they're perfect clutch bag must-haves. I've been trialling the Pink Truffle shade (pictured) and a friend has been testing Calypso Coral to great effect. All through summer and into the autumn everyone said I'd never looked so healthy, while my friend got heaps of compliments about her in-love glow.

Dragon's Breathe Fire into John Lewis Perfumes

Dragons Den is all set to create another happy ending as the new perfume range, Scents of Time hits the shelves exclusively at John Lewis this month. With the backing of Peter Jones and Theo Paphitis, the range will be available at five key branches of the department store, nationwide from 9th October 2008.

Scents of Time is the brainchild of David Hunter Pybus, dubbed the "twenty-first century Indiana Jones of the fragrance world”. The range of four fragrances have been recreated from original scents of centuries past, using ancient aromas to create deliciously unique scents.

David, through his skills as an aromancer, has been able to successfully reconstruct the lost perfume of Pompeii, Tutankhamen’s aroma of intrigue as well as the sacred scent of Cleopatra. He has successfully reconstructed the perfumes based on preserved samples, historical literature and ancient recipes, keeping the original aromatic experience intact.

There are three women's fragrances and one unisex scent. From Nenufar, which has been recreated with blue lotus water lilies favoured by the Pharaohs, to Pyxis formulated from a combination of flowers, fruits and spices found in Pompeii perfumer Sperato’s garden; each scent has a unique story behind it.

Halle Berry's Super Scent

Another day, another celebrity perfume is launched. At least that's sometimes how it feels as everyone from Kate Moss to the Hollyoaks girls have come out with their own scent. Now Halle Berry is apparently joining the team.

My American counterpart Bella US had sniffed out the news that a scent might be on the horizon for Halle way back in February, but today Halle has confirmed the news.

“Fragrance is something I’ve wanted to do for myself,” Halle told WWD, “It’s a real, true expression of who I am — I was involved in all aspects of making it. It felt like it was the right time in my life to take it on, and Coty’s been a great partner to do that with. I hope this is the first of a number of fragrances.”

Halle certainly seems to be very involved in the perfume, from making the actual scent to helping to design the bottle. Her two favorite notes of fig and mimosa are included in the final scent, as is olibanum, an African root to bring spice and sandalwood. Halle describes it as "very sensual, very natural, very much reflective of the outdoors.”

New Product Alert: Hollyoaks Her Perfume

Yesterday Hollyoaks stars Carley Stenson, Gemma Merna and Emma Rigby posed to celebrate the launch of the eagerly awaited Hollyoaks fragrances. They are titled, somewhat unimaginatively, Hollyoaks Her and Hollyoaks Him, priced at £19.95 each from Superdrug.

The perfumes are the first ever fragrances to be launched by a UK TV show and are part of the ever-growing Hollyoaks brand. Now I don't know about you, but this sort of makes me like Hollyoaks less. Plus such blatent commercialisation smacks of greed, but if Britney, Paris and even Kate Moss are going to churn out fragrances capitalising on their fame, then why not the Hollyoaks team?

“Hollyoaks epitomises the aspirations and lifestyles of today's young people." says Sean Marley, Managing Director of Lime Pictures. "The Hollyoaks fragrances will be an exciting and accessible extension of what is already one of the UK's most successful youth brands."

Unluckily for me, I haven't yet smelt the perfume itself but the women's version contains top notes of pink lychee, golden pear and sugared apple with a heart of jasmine and white chocolate and base notes of sweet musk. I'm imagining super, almost sickly, sweet will be the order of the day. If you love the show, then this one's for you! Personally though, I think I might be giving it a miss.

In the beauty journalism world, products can be pretty much divided into the big name brands that you get sent for free and which everyone knows and loves, and the smaller, niche labels. These are the ones you've discovered due to some painstaking research or a personal recommendation from a real friend. Cartrysse falls into the latter category and I can not overstate how much I believe in this cult brand.

It works on the principle of synergy aromatherapy, which is basically using different essential oils in exact measurements. This way the oils not only complement each other, but also unleash each ones maximum skin-healing potential.

The Soothing Hydra-Fluid Moisturiser, (£35), is without doubt the best moisturiser I have ever tried and believe me, I've used a lot of face creams in my time!

The Opium of the Masses: YSL Collectors Edition

YSL's classic fragrance, Opium, is getting something of a face lift this month. From the end of September Yves Saint Laurent is introducing a collectors edition bottle of the popular perfume. Opium, (£51), celebrates it's 31st birthday this year and the sophisticated scent is still just as desirable as it was when it first hit the shops in 1977.

The perfume has definite shades of the glamour and opulence of the 70's Studio 54 and it's famously exotic smell connotes a hedonistic party spirit. Notes of mandarin, myrhh and amber give it a familiarly distinctive smell. The new collectors' edition bottle is red-lacquered and decorated at the back with the iconic YSL signature. Definitely one for the dressing table.
