Whether you're suffering from adult acne or you just get the occasional spot — chances are you've had those bad face days, when a pesky blackhead made you want to retreat right back to the duvet.

The best way to get rid of blackheads is to remove the cause of them — excessive sebum or oil and dead skin cells. As I've said before, don't use anything overly harsh or too astringent, as your skin will only compensate by producing more oil. A specially formulated range for blemish-prone skin is best.

Don't be afraid of using cleansing products containing natural oils, such as jojoba or coconut oil to cleanse the skin. These oils are close to our natural oils, so they don't block the pores. I swear by DHC Cleansing Oil (£16) to keep your skin looking clear.

I know that most of you are divided about which method of hair removal you prefer. "If you're tired then avoid dark colours on the eyes" suggests Becca. "Instead go for creamy neutrals and pale shades to make your eyes sparkle."

If you're planning on batting for England this season, the key to autumn's latest looks is Bambi-esque lashes with plenty of fluttering potential. Whether you're working the metallic trend, going all out with goth glamour or contrasting dark eyes with nude lip shades; long, luscious lashes are always super desirable.

For fail-safe, long lashes, here are some expert tips:

Make sure that the mascara wand is free of clumps. A quick wipe with a tissue will ensure smooth results. Also, wiping around the actual tube will prevent a build-up of product for further applications.
Curl lashes then aim to use as little mascara as possible. Over-loading lashes with product only makes them look thick and spidery, instead of long and fluttering.
Position the mascara wand at the very roots of your eyelashes. Wiggle gently to ensure coverage while carefully lifting from the roots.
Increase the movement by slowly wiggling the wand in a zigzag motion from the roots to the ends. Don't overload the ends of the lashes as this will make them heavier and the curl will droop.
Finally, while the mascara is still wet carefully brush through with a clean mascara brush. I use one from an old mascara. Alternatively use an eyelash comb for extra precision and to get rid of clumps.

The best part of any good facial is having a skincare professional smooth and massage your skin – for a firming, plumping and youth-enhancing effect.

To top up your regular facials, or if you don't have the time or money to get professional facial massages – try these top tips for at-home pampering:

First, choose a good facial oil. I like a diluted rose essential oil. For mature or prematurely aging skin, try Trilogy Rosehip Oil.
Apply the oil to a clean face. Use your index, middle and ring fingers to lightly stroke and massage the skin.
First, tap your eyebrows with your middle fingers, lightly at first, and then harder. Start at the very top of the nose, and tap outwards, over the brows and then in a circular motion, around the eyes, and across the top of the cheekbones, under the eyes – until you come back up to the bridge of your nose.

Regular, yet gently, exfoliating will ensure that your lips stay super soft and young-looking.

Here's how:

Use simple petroleum jelly and apply generously to the lips.
Next, take a wet washcloth and gently rub the lips, until all the jelly has disappeared, and your lips are dry.
For a rougher scrub, use an old toothbrush or a child's toothbrush that is soft. Gently rub over the lips in circular motions.
Once any white flakes have disappeared, and your lips are dry, but smooth looking – apply a good lip balm, such as Apples & Pears, (£10.50).

Splitting nails looks messy and is super annoying when you're trying to grow your talons. Look at your diet, if you're not eating enough protein that could be part of the problem. Secondly, make sure you're buffing your nails correctly, and not being overly harsh.

Splitting nails is a common problem that occurs when natural oils have escaped from the nail plate. This can happen for a number of reasons, but is also caused by the nail being stripped of it's natural oils through day-to-day activities such as washing your hands.

Use a treatment oil every morning and night, such as Paul & Joe's, (£10). If possible, slather on the oil before you go to sleep, and then smooth on a specially designed hand cream, such as Dermalogica Multivitamin Hand and Nail Treatment.

I know it's not very cool, but I have a secret obsession with musicals. So I'm ridiculously excited about seeing Mamma Mia! this Thursday, and have been pouring over my girl Pop UK's interviews with the cast.

I was also struck by how very blonde and sunny-looking the three leading actresses are. Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski and Amanda Seyfried all have very covetable blonde locks, despite their age differences.

Although blondes don't tend to go as noticeably grey as brunettes do, blonde colour does fade, and even younger blondes will find that on certain days their hair just doesn't look as bright and light.

Here's the second part of my crib notes for surviving the Wedding Season in style. So you've mastered the basic beauty dos and dont's – now it's time to talk clutch kits.

Space is paramount here as it's likely you'll only be carrying an eeny weeny bag, preferably metallic or snakeskin for this season. However, it is going to be a long day (and night) so think carefully about what you're going to need to stay beautiful.

Here's my clutch kit:

First off, the sensible stuff. Plasters in case of blisters, safety pins for fashion emergencies and hair grips and bobble in the likely event that you'll have to do a last-minute up do, mid-conga.
Blotting papers take up hardly any room and will keep you looking shine free. Also take a sample size (ask at a department store) mini bottle of your foundation.
Lipstick and lip balm are essentials. I like a slightly tinted lip balm like Kiehl's, lip gloss in Goldenberry, (£12), that can be worn under and over lipstick.
A travel kit or makeup compact is a great space-saver. At the moment I'm using an Estée Lauder one I got free with two purchases. Or try the Ruby & Millie Eye Kit, (£12).
A light-reflecting concealer will keep you looking fresh. Try Givenchy Mister Light, (£19), a brightening and concealing corrective pen.
A cream blusher, in a thin container, such as Becca's Lip & Cheek Creme, (£22), in Tuberose, will fit snugly in your clutch and keep you looking pretty.

How To Get Ladylike Lipstick

As the mood for thoroughly, grown-up glamour continues, the trend for classic, made-up lips shows no signs of abating any time soon.

Choosing your colours is one thing, but this dramatic look is all in the application. First prepare your lips with balm, such as Apples & Pears, (£10.50). This will help ensure an even application.

Then follow these simple tips:

Always apply lipstick with a brush for maximum staying power, and a neater application. Use a lip brush, for a definite line, or try a small, flat eyeshadow brush if you want to keep the edges softer and more modern.
The idea of lining lips with a pencil seems old-fashioned, but if you want your colour to last then it's important to use a pencil first. This works best for evenings or events where you want to make an entrance. Use short strokes to colour the lip all over, starting from the cupid's bow.
Next apply the lipstick using a brush, in smooth, even strokes. If you feel like you've applied too much, simply blot with a tissue.
For the daytime, when overly defined lips can look scarily overdone, just pat the lipstick colour onto your lips, over balm, just using your fingertips.
Try and keep the rest of your makeup classic and ensure the skin is matte, as this makes your lips look extra bold.

A Quick Tip For Matte Skin

Since the girls at Donna Karan and Louis Vuitton stormed the Spring/Summer runways with matte, made-up faces, it figures that the art of blotting is having a resurgence. After all, if you follow Dita Von Teese's lead and go for a full face of makeup, with a matte base, the last thing you want are shiny patches peeking through.

It can be tempting to just pile on the powder. Whilst you should certainly apply a dusting of translucent powder, such as Clarins, (£26), after applying base, adding layer upon layer of powder throughout the day will only create a cakey and uneven affect.

Much better to blot. Use special blotting papers, like Paul & Joe, (£10). Or take a tip from my Beauty Editor friend and carry a pack of tissues. When you notice any shine, then take a tissue and carefully remove the top layer so you have an ultra-thin tissue instead. Then place it onto the forehead, or any shiny place, and simply pat your fingers onto the tissue as you would with blotting paper.

Easy, huh? Who ever said you had to suffer to be beautiful?

A Quick Tip For Natural Fake Lashes

If you want Bambi-esque, come-hither eyes, then sometimes fake lashes are the only way to flutter. They work particularly well at a dressy event, when you're wearing a lot of eye makeup and want to balance out your winged eyeliner with some lengthy lashes. For really natural looking eyelashes, it's better to go for individual falsies, as they have less of the drag queen about them. Try Screenface Individual Lashes, (£4.95).
Here's how:

First use eyelash curlers and your usual mascara to enhance what you already have. This way you'll see if there are any parts of your lashes that aren't as full.
Apply some eyelash glue to the back of your hand then take a pair of tweezers and carefully dip the end of the false lashes into the glue, wait a few minutes until the glue is slightly tacky.
Press the false lashes onto the base of your lashes, from midway to the outer corner, for maximum effect. Use three or four of the individual falsies.
Apply black eyeliner to blur the join and to give you sultry, kittenish eyes

Festival Chic Part 3 – Model Hair

The beauty-countdown to Glastonbury has begun. Last night I heard that cool band du jour, MGMT are playing. What with them wanting some models for wives and all, I thought it best to at least pretend to have glossy, freshly-washed hair during the three-day stint. Cue, the lazy girl's saviour – dry shampoo!

By day two or three if you're looking a little greasy, simply spray some onto your roots. Wait a few moments for it to grab hold of the grease, then brush through to remove any chalky, white residue.

I do this with my head upside down to add volume. Then I just add a little more to my parting and brush through.

Here's my top three dry shampoos:

Kevin Murphy Fresh.Hair, (£11.99). Very easy to use and leaves you with that just-washed feeling. Good on all hair types too, and is a handy travel size for Glasto.
Batiste Tropical Dry Shampoo, (£1.99). An absolute bargain. Smells gorgeous and I love the retro floral bottle. Best if you have light hair, as can leave a slight powdery residue.
James Brown Dry Shampoo, I'm betting Kate Moss will have her best mate and hairstylist, James Brown's dry shampoo on hand this weekend. Smells good and comes in a mini travel size bottle too. (£1.99 from Boots.)

Festival Chic Part 2 – Glamour Girl's Glastonbury

Just one more day to go until Glastonbury. So if you've got your studded, Burberry wellies at the ready, and put together your basic beauty essentials – now's the time to add a little glitz. How else are you going to catch the eyes of all those boys in bands?

For super-cool, rock chick chic, go all out with smudgy black eyeliner and more than a little glitz. Friday's lineup is the one I'm most excited about – Kings of Leon, Foals and The Gossip – so work that indie girl groupie look on the first day.

Day one can be all about impeccable makeup and head-turning hair, because you get to apply it at home. After that, the rules are there ain't no rules – so leave your makeup on overnight and just touch it up a little the next day. Quick Tip For Beautifully Buffed Nails

Recently I keep being asked – should you buff your nails at home? Does this make them weaker? The answer is no, at least so long as you buff correctly.

Buffing is the best way to keep nails looking shiny and healthy, as well as making them strong. Aim to remove any dips and ridges, to create a smooth canvas. This makes your varnish last longer, as well as making it easier to apply. Here's my simple four step guide to how to buff:

STEP 1: Before buffing, apply cuticle oil to the nails such as Nails Inc. vitamin E cuticle oil pen, (£10). Buffing after applying the oil will encourage the oil to be absorbed, adding extra nourishment to your nails.
STEP 2: Avoid metal files and use a professional buffer instead. Try The Sanctuary 4-Way Buffer, (£2). Then, starting with the roughest grit side of the buffer, begin to buff your nails with a gentle motion, working from one side to the other – not back and forth. At first, just aim to smooth out major ridges.
STEP 3: Use the second roughest part of the buffer, then the next roughest, so you go from roughest to smoothest. Keep working from one side to the other, in a smooth motion.
STEP 4: Finally, use the smoothest side of the buffer for super-shiny nails. If cuticles are peeling or snagging, use cuticle oil every few days.

A Quick Tip For a Perfect Ponytail

The pony has never been so hot - from the Calvin Klein show –as seen here – to celebs such as Kate Beckinsale and Jennifer Aniston working the look. It's a classic, chicly sleek approach. While I'm a big fan of messy ponytails, it's the groomed, preppy pony that's really big this season. So, here's three easy steps to getting that Upper East Side style:

STEP 1: Tease the crown of your hair ever so slightly so that you have some fullness around your face when your hair is pulled back. Keep it smooth though by misting on a shine spray first.
STEP 2: Brush your hair back with a good boar-bristle brush to smooth out the surface. Then, gather your hair into a mid-to-high ponytail and secure it with an elastic.
STEP 3: For a super-sleek look go over the pony with straighteners.

A Quick Tip For Beautiful Brushes

Washing your makeup brushes might be down there on the to-do list, along with other beauty chores, such as clearing out your makeup bag. But when you think about all the dirt, germs and other nasties that get clogged into your brushes you might want to try and stick to a regular once-a-fortnight routine. Think about it, you wouldn't apply foundation without washing your hands, so why would you put dirty brushes on your skin?

I admit, I am culpable of this beauty crime. But as of today, I am starting a new routine, washing my blusher, foundation, eye shadow and lip brushes regularly. Use a mild shampoo, such as one formulated for babies like Johnson & Johnson's Baby Shampoo, (£2.49 for 500ml).

Fill a sink with warm water and pour in a little shampoo as though it were bubble bath. Then leave take any of your bristle brushes, such as blusher or powder ones, and gently rub them with the soapy water. Take care not to scrub though, as most makeup brushes are fragile and the hairs will break. Smooth the water onto the brush in a downward motion as though the brush were a ponytail you were brushing with your hands. Leave them to soak for five minutes or so if they're really dirty but not too long.

Next —you might want to refill the sink for this if the water's dirty —take any sponge applicators, eyeshadow brushes and lip brushes and applicators and rub gently with fingers. You can leave these to soak , as they probably have more makeup residue on them, but no longer than 30 minutes or so.

Don't ever rub brushes or sponge applicators dry. Instead pat with a hand towel and then leave them to air dry, on top of the towel. Now, you can feel jolly pleased with yourself and go and have a nice cup of tea. Job done.
