In the summer there is always the siren call of going blonde. Perhaps it's all that sunshine, but most of us always want to go lighter during the summer months. Plus messy, beach head hair doesn't look quite the same on a brunette or redhead. Come winter though somehow being dark seems altogether more sophisticated. I'm always tempted to go just a few shades darker for a sleek, shiny Lily Allen look. Plus there's something about very black hair that works with this season's dramatic goth trend on the catwalks.How about you, are you tempted to go darker in the autumn?

Last night in New York, Rihanna was busy making outfit changes for charity. She started the night in a red, one-shouldered cocktail frock for the lighting of the UNICEF Snowflake/Gucci Tattoo Heart Collection for UNICEF launch and then she went to the dinner for the new Gucci line in a long, body-hugging mauve floor-length number. I have to admit that sometimes I cringe when I see girls on the tube apply full makeup. For a start, how can they do it on such a bumpy train ride? However, truth be told, I'm not averse to touching up my lipstick during the morning commute although I'd draw the line at mascara or foundation. I have to laugh when I see girls putting on lippy in front of shop windows though!
My girl Bella US has consulted queen of etiquette Emily Post about whether this is a do or don't, but as with most questions of etiquette, it's often about the company you keep. At the dinner table would be a big no no for me, although I have a friend who says a quick touch-up, even at a business meeting, is fine as long as you don't draw attention to yourself. With the crazy weather and snow storm flurries we've been experiencing this week, it's no wonder that our thoughts are turning to winter-proofing our beauty regimes. While I adore using thick face creams, luxurious body oils and treatment lip balms in the winter, I can't help but feel more beautiful when I have some skin on show in the summer months. Plus fighting cold and flu germs, weather that makes your nose red and frizzy hair because of all the rain, do not a happy beauty editor make.
On the other hand I have friends who say they feel more attractive in the winter, as the cold weather creates that flushed look on the cheeks and makes pale skin look prettier. There's also the fact that you don't have to worry about your legs looking lightly tanned or your pedicure being perfect when you're all wrapped up. How about you, do you feel more gorgeous this time of year? Source

With all the new fragrance launches around it's tough to be faithful to just one perfume. I'm still head over heels in love with Loewe's Quiza Quizas Quizas and it's recently become my signature scent. As it's so unusual most people who comment on it don't recognise the perfume or haven't smelt it on anyone else, which is so nice in a world where sometimes it seems we're all wearing the same leopard print clothing, red lipsticks and flicked out black eyeliner as everyone else.
I have to admit though that I'm not averse to a little bit of Chanel Allure on the side. Plus Chloe makes me feel like one of those 70's muses with flowing locks and dubious morals. Do you play the field when it comes to perfume, or have you found a favorite? Source

It's a few weeks away I know, but as the invites comes flooding in it's good to get your beauty look nailed. Even if you don't want to go all out, Halloween is a great excuse to experiment with your makeup. From super pale ghostly skin to vampire blood red lips, it's the season to get ghoulish. This year I'm tempted to just do goth glam dark eyes and add in some Bride of Frankenstein white netting to make a hair piece. Although, the false eyelashes trend is always appealing too. I think it started after seeing a super fiery haired Lily Cole on the cover of French Playboy. However, it could have been spotting trademark redhead Karen Elson strutting her stuff at the Zac Posen show in New York, that made me want to dye my hair red. Either way, I'm seriously considering becoming a Jessica Rabbit lookalike for autumn. There's something extra beautiful about red-haired women in autumn, maybe it's because the shade complements the falling leaves. Red hair has that naturally rare quality that give it both stand-out and earthy appeal. Whether a pale auburn or the dark red or '90s supermodel Linda Evangelista, there is something undeniably appealing about red hair. How about you, are you tempted to go red this autumn? Source

At Elle's 15th Annual Women in Hollywood event last night, a glowing Nicole Kidman rubbed shoulders with a host of stars, including Kate Beckinsale, Halle Berry, Eva Mendes and Anne Hathaway.Nicole looked incredibly fresh faced, with perfect skin and just a hint of pink blush. Her eye makeup was dramatic, with dark black kohl on the upper lashes and a smudgy, lime green colour just below her eyes. This somewhat bizarre combination actually looked stunning thanks, I'm sure, to her expert makeup artist. Nicole's dark rose lip colour bought out the flush in her cheeks and she wore her hair poker straight. I'm not sure about the different shades of blonde in her hair though, and is that a hint of grey I can detect near her roots? How about you, do you love or hate Nicole's beauty look? As the weather takes a definite turn for the worse, with an ultra cold October, extra beauty maintenance is certainly required. As you all know, I am a body lotion addict and it's not very scientific but I definitely feel like wearing body cream is like adding an extra layer of clothing to protect against the harsh winter elements. Of course, the first area to feel the cold and wind is usually our hands. I've recently got into a good habit of using Kiehl's Unusually Rich But Not At All Greasy hand Cream. I keep in on my desk now to remind me to apply it regularly, but I have to admit it's not something I'm naturally inclined to do. How about you, do you regularly use hand cream in the winter months?

This week she was looking sophisticated at a book launch in London, wearing it long, full and feathery. Once thought of as a terrible beauty crime, coloured mascara is making something of a comeback. Witness celebrities like Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Princess Eugenie working the coloured lashes look (albeit with fakes). Mascara in shades ranging from flattering navy blue and deep brown to this season's plum and dark olive, are back on the beauty agenda. Look-at-me shades of hot pink, baby blue and even red are being seen from the catwalk to the high street. Personally I'm not sure that this is a look I'll be following as I like my lashes to look thick, well-defined and the deepest shade of ebony. I have to admire girls that can pull it off though. At the Vivienne Westwood show at London Fashion Week, front row stars Dita von Teese, Jaime Winstone and Myleene Klass joined Kate Moss and a smoky-eyed Mischa Barton for the after party. Mischa played up her eyes with layers of charcoal, grey and black shadow. Add black liner and plenty of mascara and you've got a failsafe fashion party look. She kept her lips nude and the rest of her makeup simple to show off her eyes. Always on-trend, Mischa worked her front row credentials with dark nails. At the Erdem show actress Emilia Fox and model Erin O'Connor worked their catwalk beauty credentials, albeit in very different ways. Erin went for a typically understated look with minimal lip colour and just a hint of mascara. Her ebony hair and pale skin provide a striking contrast, although I do like seeing her with red lipstick. Emilia glammed it up with smoky black eyes, a hair twist and peachy blush for a pretty effect. I really like her lip colour but I'm not sure why she felt the need to suck in her cheeks quite so much for this photo. Whose beauty look do you prefer?

This is certainly looking to be the season of the full brow. Models Hilary Rhoda and Agyness Deyn have been leading the way, but when I saw pictures of Agyness on the catwalk at the Henry Holland show yesterday at London Fashion Week, I could swear her brows are even bushier.Perhaps it's the contrast with her ultra pale, bleach blonde new bob, but she is definitely flying the flag for strong eyebrows. Whilst it's always useful to follow model advice for creating the perfect neat arc, I'm not sure if facial features can be copied in the same way. Having said that, I do think most of us could benefit from growing our brows a little, as oppose to looking over-plucked. How about you, will you be growing your brows like Agyness this season? The new makeup collections for autumn showcase a plethora of barely-there beiges and pink nudes to chose from this season. Bobbi Brown has an entire line entitled Shimmering Nude, whilst the Nars collection features glistening neutral lip colours with pared-down sheer formulations. Already it seems that nude lips, whether matte, sheer or ultra glossy, will still be going strong next spring. At New York Fashion Week the models at Peter Som, (pictured), Mathew Williamson, Preen and Vivienne Tam all wore variations on the nude lip. In real life, a nude lip colour can be tricky to wear especially if you're pale. Plus I have to admit that it can be time consuming to find the perfect neutral shade that looks both flattering and insouciantly effortless. Will you be wearing nude lip colours this season? Source

I have to admit that when Victoria Beckham went for the chop this week, I was a tiny bit tempted to follow suit. Her pixie cut looks so fun and flattering. Friends told me that when Lily Allen dyed her hair pink it suddenly made the colour look oh-so-desirable, whilst Daisy Lowe's fringe and hat accessorising has been widely copied on the streets of Shoreditch this summer. It's important to make sure a hair cut and colour suits your face shape though, as what looks cool on a celebrity may not work on everyone. It's been the week of the haircut, what with Victoria Beckham's gamine crop and Agyness Deyn's new sleek bob. Now Kate Moss has gone for the chop with this super-messy mid-length cut. Kate was showing off her hair at Punk last night, as she stepped out with boyfriend Jamie Hince. Kate's trademark blonde locks look like they've been lopped off with blunt cut scissors, giving this style an insouciant edge. The choppy, messy ends and fluffy texture also add a youthful vibe, although it looks like the kind of hairstyle you go for when your hairdresser demands you chop off the ends due to over-styling damage.
